The Sea’s storm brought them together, and the Sea’s rules will keep them apart, unless the mute but melodious Muirigan can find another to take her place, freeing her to pursue the human man she loves. But when her plan collides with the schemes of the sly South Wind, a princess’s agenda to look for love in all the most fantastic places, and a prince whose head and heart have been long years at war, the result is a tragedy of errors from which the world might never recover. ~ The Surrogate Sea (Book Six of The Wilderhark Tales) ~ ***** An enchantress's curse turns a spoiled royal into a beast; a princess's pricked finger places her under a hundred-year spell; bales of straw are spun as golden as the singing harp whisked down a giant beanstalk - all within sight of Wilderhark, the forest that's seen it all. You've heard the stories - of young men scaling rope-like braids to assist the tower-bound damsel; of gorgeous gowns appearing just in time for a midnight ball; of frog princes, and swan princes, and princes saved from drowning by maidens of the sea. Tales of magic. Tales of adventure. Most of all, tales of true love. Once upon a time, you knew them as fairytales. Know them now as Wilderhark's.

The Surrogate Sea: Book Six of The Wilderhark Tales (Volume 6), by Danielle E Shipley

About the Author Danielle E. Shipley's first novelettes told the everyday misadventures of wacky kids like herself. ...Or so she thought. Unbeknownst to them all, half of her characters were actually closeted elves, dwarves, fairies, or some combination thereof. When it all came to light, Danielle did the sensible thing: Packed up and moved to Fantasy Land, where daily rent is the low, low price of her heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears, firstborn child, sanity, and words; lots of them. She's also been known to spend short bursts of time in the real-life Chicago area with the parents who homeschooled her and the two little sisters who keep her humble. When she's not living the highs and lows of writing young adult novels, she's probably blogging about it at EverOnWord.wordpress.com.

This is in part of The Wilderhark tales reviews (1:The Swan Prince, 2: The Stone Kingdom, 3: The Seventh Spell, 4: The Song Caster, 5: The Sun's Rival, 6.5: The Sky-Child and Other Stories).*Sigh* I struggled reading through this story for some reason. I think my main issue is that I couldn't relate to the main characters. Liliavaine is the main character, little sister of Laraspur (who I loved), but I didn't like Lily much in The Sun's Rival. I thought maybe she'd grow up and mature in this story but I didn't see it in this book. I couldn't get into her character or her actions. I also did not care at all for her love interest who lied and manipulated everyone. I love a good twist or deception but this one seemed like he got away with it and had little repercussions. I found it unbelievable how Lily fell in love and in such little time. I think more than 3 days would be needed to grow to love someone.Ion, who I thought was reasonable, was not at all reasonable in this story and it irked me with who he chose in the end. I had such high hopes for him because next to Lara, he was my next favorite of the siblings. I think both Denebdeor royals had chosen poorly and my heart drips with disappointment.I certainly felt bad for many people in this book. Very tragic how it ended and definitely not my preferred ending. With all of Shipley's other endings, I thought it would turn out differently but maybe she wanted to change things up a bit. She certainly did that with this story. Some things I did enjoy in this story is the way The Great Sea is allowed to move around. That's something I'd love to be able to do. Exploring the depths and even the heights of the world. I'm glad we got to see that and how the sea and wind work together. I also loved seeing Rosalba and Edgwyn again (my favorite Wilderhark couple) as well as Lumond and Lara.Shipley's writing is nice, but again I couldn't quite connect to the characters. I had high hopes with the meshing of two of my favorite fairy tales, the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, However, I was not satisfied with this story but perhaps that's just my view of the story. Perhaps you may enjoy more than I. If you're not a HEA fan you may like this story. It's a HFN but depending which characters you're rooting for in the story.2.8 out of 5 for me!(An ARC was provided by the author for an honest review. I was not compensated in any other way.)

I was not compensated in any other way.)My Goodreads review states that this novella, for me, can be described in one word: "unexpected." This still holds true. It isn't unexpected in a bad way. Another phrase I used was "benefit of the doubt."Being completely honest, I didn't like this novella's conclusion. For all of the tales of true love that we've read in The Wilderhark Tales up until now, how this book ends does not feel like true love. That's why I'm sincerely hoping this turns out to be a Part-One-of-Two ordeal.Everything else remains just as amazing as has come to be expected though. Each character has their own motivations, feelings, and methods of addressing conflict. Reading The Wilderhark Tales can be like reading a pop-up book: the characters are still leaping off the pages! The progression of the plot was steady and never felt too rushed or too slow. Especially considering Shipley's transitions from Liliavaine to Muirigan to Ionquin to Vesparya (and more at times), she did a beautiful job of keeping their stories separated and at the same time joined together, all the while keeping the perception of time well in place. As for the plot's twists and turns, there are no shortage of twists throughout this novella! Unexpected, indeed. "Whoa," "Huh?," and "What!" were all uttered at least once during my reading. The Surrogate Sea's got it all - sibling rivalry and love, scorned love, playful banter, conflict and resolution. Not to mention we get to see all of the awesome cast introduced in The Sun's Rival! (*Gasp!* More Lumónd and Laraspur!)Though, as I said before, the resolution didn't satisfy me. It might satisfy others, but it didn't work for me. The final pairing that much of the book focused on (not Muirigan's) doesn't settle well with me, and I'm sincerely hoping that I'm right that the tale of The Surrogate Sea isn't quite over.Yet, even if it is, that doesn't change the fact that this was a deeply enjoyable read and inspired a myriad of feelings. This book is especially a good novella for moral debates. This is indeed one of the most investing books of the series. In conclusion, Danielle Shipley's fantastic writing has struck again!

My favorite aspect of the book are the interactions of the elemental characters with the human folk. Danielle excels at making fascinating and well-rounded characters, this is especially true when it comes to her more magical characters.I'm not crazy about complicated love triangles, but I know a good one when I read one, and this one has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing how it's all going to work out. There is always a concern when reading a book in a series without reading the earlier books. I hadn't read the earlier books in the Wilderhawk Tales and so there were several references in this book that I didn't fully understand, only because I hadn't read their stories. However, the book is well enough constructed that it is still very readable without having to read the rest of the series first.Overall I give the book 4 out of 5 stars - The beginning starts slow as we wait for all the characters to be re-established and re-introduced. The true heart of the conflict isn't revealed until much later. Once you get there then you can't put it down.If you like fairy tale stories, love triangles, unique magic, princes and princesses, and a whole lot of mischief, then this book is sure to please.I received a copy of Surrogate Sea in exchange for an honest review.
