Great, easy to read law book for the non-attorney By Ben Crary Excellent, easy to read book that takes you from the foundations of government to informed consent, what to expect in the courtroom, malpractice, and more. Perfect for boards and not a bad idea to keep a copy in your office for that rainy day in the future when you need a no-nonsense explanation of what a claims-made policy is (for example). Highly recommend, absolutely for boards!

As a medical student myself, the knowledge I have gained from this book has been vital for understanding my current legal and ethical responsibilities as well as those which I will have as a future physician. In an age where teaching is often replaced by presentations, it is so refreshing to have a book that is, in and of itself, an excellently taught course in medical jurisprudence and medical ethics. This book will help you understand the American medico-legal system, its origins, evolution and how it applies to you. The chapters are organized and titled in a manner that allows the book to be easily used as a quick reference. Common issues if approached with a professional manner and guided by a clear understanding of your responsibilities as demonstrated in this book, can help you to avoid the thought processes and actions that may potentially lead to legal and/or ethical culpability. Dr. Goldman's guide also provides clear-cut and no-nonsense coaching for you in the event that you are petitioned for medical records or summoned for courtroom testimony as a: fact witness, expert witness, plaintiff, or defendant. This book is not a substitute for good judgment or moral uprightness. If you are deficient in either of these, no single book can make up for it, but the application of the principles in this book is an excellent place to start.

Often medical ethics and legalities are taught as nebulous or vague, most often due to poor understanding. Dr. Goldman has a unique perspective as he not only has a medical degree but also has a law degree, and is a practicing board certified psychiatrist. This affords Dr. Goldman a unique perspective that is often missed in today's medical education. This is a must read and a book to put on your desk for years to come.
